The results are in! The ASAPS numbers, that is. Each year, plastic surgeons around the country look forward to the publication of statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, or ASAPS. The organization collects data from plastic surgeons all year long to keep tabs on the popularity of certain procedures. At our plastic surgery practice in St. Louis, we use this information to help us anticipate the desires of our patients in the upcoming year.

One of the most interesting developments in the numbers from 2016 is the rise in popularity of plastic surgery procedures for men. Men undergo plastic surgery for very different reasons than women. Let’s take a look at the most common aesthetic concerns for men:

  • Aging face: Men are often more susceptible to facial aging than women are, often due to lax attitudes about skincare and sun protection. And, unlike other changes throughout the body, facial aging can’t be hidden beneath clothes. Men gravitate to at-home skincare products, BOTOX® Cosmetic, and injectable fillers because these treatments are easy to administer and don’t require any time away from work or other activities.
  • Double chin: Men who wear dress shirts are often especially aware of a double chin or a sagging neck. Not only can these features be unattractive, they can also be physically uncomfortable. Treatments for this area range from the minimally invasive (injectable KYBELLA®) to surgery, such as chin enhancement or a neck lift.
  • Dad bod: The “dad bod” is a cute way to describe how a man’s body changes with time — sometimes related to parenting, but not always. Weight gain and other normal age-related changes can be reduced with procedures such as CoolSculpting®, liposuction, and male breast reduction. None of these procedures leaves behind major scars, and, in most cases, male patients who undergo surgical body contouring can get back to work within a week.

Taking the necessary steps to look your best leads to a sense of confidence that can help you feel your best, too. Our patients and our surgeons alike know this. In fact, our own Dr. Lund has undergone CoolSculpting with great results. We’re excited to help you envision the possibilities, too.
