Chilly temperatures. Dry air. Your skin doesn’t like it! It’s more than a little ironic that some of the worst dry skin conditions begin to flare up when there’s snow everywhere, but that’s how it goes.
Luckily, there are a few ways that you can combat these pesky skin conditions. Let’s talk through a few of the most common things winter brings, why some of these skin conditions get so bad, and what you can do about it.
Your skin is your body’s barrier to the outside world, and it takes a lot of abuse.
We all know what a nasty wind chill feels like. You might not know, though, that it causes a drastic change in the way that your skin reacts with the environment.
This also causes changes in your day-to-day routine you might not be thinking about. Due to the cold temperatures outside, we try harder to warm up at home. This means that the heater is staying on longer and baths are getting hotter. These everyday practices cause our skin to dry out due to a drop in natural oils and the water in our skin evaporating more quickly. And when we do venture outside, the winds and the dry air make it difficult for the skin to hold moisture.
These dryer conditions and habits lead to an array of different skin conditions.
Some are worse than others, but all are annoying. One of the most universally common conditions is dry skin. Dry skin occurs when there is a lack of natural oils, or when the body is unable to produce the necessary amount of natural oils. We refer to skin as being dehydrated when it is completely stripped of our natural oils. You’ll know your skin is dehydrated when it feels itchy, flaky, tight, or even oily. Chapped skin often accompanies this (i.e., skin that is flaky, dry, and painful).
Combating these conditions doesn’t have to be a battle.
That’s why we offer the skin rejuvenating services needed to take control of your skin. We offer several medical-grade skincare products at our med spa for Illinois and St. Louis-area patients. Some of the product lines that we offer include PRESCRIBEDsolutions®, SkinMedica®, ZO Skin Health®, and many more. Along with our skincare products, we offer a complete skin evaluation during your consultation, which helps us pair the best product to your skin type, condition, and long-term skincare goals. Don’t forget that we also offer skincare treatments such as chemical peels – one of the easier ways to improve your skin. Our treatments are relatively affordable and are used to combat several skin irritations.
It’s important to note that the products that we offer can only be obtained through a physician, due to the stronger level of active ingredients. You can find our skincare products on our online store, which we offer through Allergan’s reward program.
If you begin a skincare regimen and follow through with it, you’ll have your answer to healthier skin. But there’s more you can do at home, too: Remember to lower your thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature and remember to take shorter baths. Follow these recommendations and you’ll have healthier skin in no time.
